Off-site residency 2021
Seke Chimutengwende is a choreographer, performer, movement director and teacher.
During his time with the Bluecoat he conducted part of his research into a new group choreography. The research explores ghosts and haunted houses as a metaphor for how histories of slavery and colonialism continuously haunt the present. He's been working with a group of 5 dancers - Natifah White, Rose Sall Sao, Rhys Dennis, Alethia Antonia, and Adrienne Ming - as well as producer Charlie Ashwell for collaborative research time.
As part of the wider project across June - August 2021 Seke will also undertake residencies at Dance4, Newstead Abbey and The Place, funded by ACE Project Grants. Previous research residencies have taken place at The Place (Choreodrome), Battersea Arts Centre, Wainsgate Dances and Chats Palace during 2019 & 2020.
Biography
He studied dance at Lewisham College 1999 - 2001 and London Contemporary Dance School 2001 – 2004 and went on to perform for companies such as DV8 Physical Theatre, Lost Dog, Fabulous Beast and numerous independent choreographers.
Since 2006, Seke has trained extensively in improvisation with a variety of practitioners and with Andrew Morrish in particular. Seke has performed over 60 solo improvisations internationally and has performed ensemble improvisation with numerous dancers, actors and musicians.
Seke began making choreographies in 2011, including The Time Travel Piece, a semi-finalist for The Place Prize 2012, and Black Holes, a collaboration with Alexandrina Hemsley, which was selected for The British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase 2019. Seke is currently researching a new group choreography looking at ghosts and haunted houses as metaphors for how histories of slavery and colonialism haunt the present.
Since 2018, Seke has also worked as a movement director for theatre productions at The Yard Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre and The Gate Theatre.
Seke regularly teaches improvisation at The Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, London Contemporary Dance School, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Goldsmiths University.
