Bluecoat with sign advertising a modern art exhibition
1910
This early 20th century image of Bluecoat includes a modernist, hand-painted sign above the main entrance for an exhibition of painting and sculpture, which dates it to the period after the Sandon Studios Society moved into the building in 1907. The image, taken from a glass lantern slide, may be advertising the Sandon's first exhibition in 1908, which featured a painting by Monet. The Society regularly staged contemporary art shows, including two by the Post-Impressionists in 1911 and 1913. The image is arguably before the University of Liverpool's Architecture School moved into the building, as it was through the department's head, Charles Reilly, that Lord Leverhulme bought the building and renamed it Liberty Buildings, a name that was painted over the Latin inscription seen in the photograph.
